Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Some board games incorporate elements of role playing. It can be that players control a character that improves over time. It can also be a game that encourages or inspires storytelling.
Role Playing
In storytelling games, players are provided with conceptual, written, or pictorial stimuli which must be incorporated into a story of the players' creation.
Storytelling
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

Competitive, narrative adventure game for up to 3 players with apps and QR codes by the designers of Chronicles of Crime. The app creates a dynamic world where NPCs move. Every player has an own agenda / quests. The skill check system is more complex than usual. Each player has three attributes tracks (e.g., intelligence) which scale from 1 to 12. You place four disc on each track at set-up and roll a certain amount of dice for skill checks. Each die value higher than a disc on a particular track counts as a success which will influence what happens told by the app. + Fun upgrade system. # Luck of the dice.

Excellent - very much enjoy playing. Can only playthrough once though. Scenario 3 kind of boring compared to other 5, but still best storybook game with app assistance!

Production is amazing for the price and the first play was enjoyable albeit rather rote. It was pretty much what I expected - felt like a choose your own adventure with some nice exploration and discovery, however at times it was unclear what to do and after making a mistake, realized the story intended something else entirely . The ending was known before we finished - in our 2-player games, it has been clear one player would not catch up. I believe the game delivered what I wanted, and without much complexity, but left me rather uninspired because of the oversimplification of mechanisms and the dependence on exhausting the choices presented rather than compelled by the story. So I liked it, but didn't love it.
