Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Some board games incorporate elements of role playing. It can be that players control a character that improves over time. It can also be a game that encourages or inspires storytelling.
Role Playing
In storytelling games, players are provided with conceptual, written, or pictorial stimuli which must be incorporated into a story of the players' creation.
Storytelling
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

[Lee-Anne] excellent competitive app-driven storytelling game with secret objectives in a fantasy world, using map tiles like 7th Continent plus item scan mechanics (like Chronicles) and interesting skill check mechanics https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=1PLX-778uAM75OjKnT_SyztRGNJXku31E

Decent story game - don't see playing this through more than once but will probably keep for the miniatures.

I was a bit disappointed in this one given the high reviews. I think we've played 3/5 stories so far at 2P and I'm struggling to finish them. There are a lot of nice (but very tiny) minis and I like the skill system but the stories themselves fell flat. They are bland, generic dark fantasy stuff. You find yourself arbitrarily guessing where you're supposed to go for your objectives. Events and their outcomes are not often clearly connected, which makes your choices feel like a crapshoot instead of being meaningful. There's no penalty for being the goodly knight and deciding to rob the church just because the game gave you the option. There's also very little penalty for failing. You're still rewarded with loot. The combination of unclear objectives and little risk means there's not much strategy and you're better off just trying every action available to you There's also zero player interaction which feels a little weird as you walk by your competitor on the map. I don't really understand the high ratings for this one. There's too much setup and fiddly elements for not enough story impact. I'd much rather play a TTRPG or another narrative dungeon crawler like Mansions of Madness or AHLCG.
