I enjoyed Descent: Legends of the Dark more than I thought I would. The app is a big plus. The app is really useful in streamlining combat, tracking statistics and resources, assisting with line of sight and providing helpful bits of information. The only thing I felt missing from the app was full voiceovers. Also while the app functions well at the two-player count with a tablet, it might be more fiddly with higher player count or with a smaller screen. The 3D terrains are another plus, they visually make gameplay more pleasing and immersive. Gameplay and combat is interesting with the fatigue and card flipping system, and there's enough time to explore and didn't feel as rushed compared to Descent 2e. Some neutrals: I prefer sessions to be shorter in general; and while the app has a save function (as well as an undo function!), you'll still need to track where each enemy and character are at. Story / writing is ok-ish. I also felt the Character cards were somewhat thin and flimsy.

Dungeon Crawler with app integration. Successor to Descent. There is a lot of cardboard terrain. Setting up and down the terrain is a bit tedious. App dominates the game, feels more like a digital game than a board game. I like: + Card and resource (token and fatigue) management. Played cards get flipped (cards are double-sided). Cards can be charged with tokens. Multple cards can be used to build combos. + Dice have multiple symbols on a side (similar to Sword and Sorcery or Galaxy Defenders). Number of successes can be increased by playing tokens. + Heroes play differently. However, some play more interesting than others. + Dynamic maneuvering and terrain levels with different effects. + Fast pace gameplay. + Monsters have different stats plus active and passive abilities. Monsters may also manipulate other monsters. Scenarios may change monster tactics and behavior. + Scenarios: some with events with twists, encounters, small puzzles, and boss fights. + Character progression based on feats. Some feats are only available in certain scenarios. + Experience points are shared among players. + Difficulty levels. The game should be played on warfare otherwise the game is too easy and tactics become trivial. + Escalation: monsters get stronger over time (time pressure with warfare). Neutrals: # App required which handles most of the bookkeeping. # Rather generic setting and boring story. # Town phase. # 3D cardboard terrain with multiple height levels and components (similar to Chronicles of Drunagor). # Simple to manage, predictable AI. # Rudimentary looting / equipment. # Luck of the roll. Dice-based combat. # Fail forward system (avoids exploiting the game that players grind all feats). I do not like: - Set-up (3D terrain). The composite board is somewhat unstable and must be handled with care. - Difficulty does not always scale well with different player counts (can be patched in the App). - Context change: It is a weird game. I'm not sure if I am playing a board game or a video game, since I have to switch back and forth regularly. The advantage is that the app takes care of bookkeeping and referencing encounters. Still, I wonder why they didn't develop the game completely as an app? I could then move my heroes directly in the app and the app could roll dies for me as well... The app I would like to see would be one that reads the status of the board to control the monsters and events like a real game master. See also: * Chronicles of Drunagor: 3D terrain, cube management, motivating character progression, simple dice-based combat, generic fantasy. * Sword and Sorcery: Ancient Chronicles: much more fiddly, a lot of bookkeeping, and rules heavy, overall slower gameplay, similar good scenario design, dynamic tactical combat with more depth, high difficulty, generic fantasy. * Altar Quest: generated dungeons, resource management.

I can see this being hit or miss for people, but my wife and I are thoroughly enjoying it so far. Only pausing to paint the minis.
