Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

Played this at Pax. 3 Person game with myself, my 12yo and another game designer playing. We played a full game and all three of us at the end went "I dont understand what I was doing, what happened or why anyone won" We got the mechanics and the rules pretty easily, but we just didnt get it. Just didnt see the strategy or why to do certain actions. This is a betting and bluffing game where you put down tiles and different civilizations. No one owns the civilizations but you are leading them into conflict and betting on who wins. The game itself looks gorgeous and the components were very nice. Great table presentation. I really wanted to like this game, but it just fell flat.

A nice reimagining of Acquire. I love acquire. This one had a little too much randomness for me (in that either "company" could be absorbed by the other) but it was a nice streamlined version with some neat bonus effects. Would play again.

Have only played one game on TTS, but I enjoyed this game. Feels a lot like Stephenson's Rocket and a little like Yellow and Yangtze (haven't had the chance to play Acquire yet) - but it lacks some of the tension and interesting decisions in those games. I'd buy this if it weren't for the concept already having been done better and without the meh fantasy theme.
