Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
The simultaneous action selection mechanic lets players secretly choose their actions. After they are revealed, the actions resolve following the rule-set of the game.
Simultaneous Action Selection
Maneuvers that directly attack an opposing player's strength, level, life points or do something else to impede their progress.
Take That
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

Update: 9.5 to a 10. 10 plays in and the nuances of the ship selection, tactics tokens and plan selection are wholly apparent now. This allows for a great deal more control of your fate despite the randomness compared to its older Brother. Add to this knowing when to grab reinforcements over increasing friendship with an envoy vs decreasing friendship with your opponents envoy over destroying a few of their ships etc & knowing when it's best to lose a planet to gain loser advantages allows for extremely clever plays & intense games. The last 2 games with a friend who also had several games under his belt were EPIC and almost on par with the most memorable games I've had playing regular Cosmic Encounter, which is saying something! The degree of manoeuvering and outsmarting available in this 2P version is off the charts. Not to say a veteran will win EVERY game like in chess, it'd be something like 3/4 which is perfect because it keeps it fresh and exciting for both players & wouldn't be Cosmic without some surprises. I would highly recommend playing this several times and with someone at a similar level before judging it. The designers of this game need to be congratulated. I only hope this game gets enough love that they will create some more aliens, envoys and destiny cards down the track. (First Impression 9.5) This game brilliantly captures and invokes the same feelings I get when playing its bigger brother - utter fun, sheer chaos, hilarious & surprising moments from the crazy card interactions. I don't think it suffers one bit from not having the negotiation elements. Quickly becoming my favorite 2 player game after only 3 plays.

Liked the first couple plays but want to try it a couple more times before deciding whether or not we'll get much play out of it.

This game does a great job of making the 2 player game feel similar to the large game and it takes out the "having a good crowd" to make the game play great. There is some strategy to be played, but there is also a bunch of random things and chaos happening as well. That being said, this randomness will flip the tide of the game. This game is allot of fun but hard to actually have plan be carried out.
