Coraline: Beware the Other Mother
30m - 60m

Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Pretty cheap components, including a folded paper board. The card play works in such a way that it is only possible to win if the correct card is drawn at the correct time with no way to mitigate the draw. Very Poor implementation

Not a bad game - I like it - and loving Coraline certainly helps. But what the heck happened to the graphic design and component decisions? Such a visually rich film and this is the best they could do? Exact same image of either Coraline or the Other Mother on each card in their respective decks? A folded paper “map” for a board that’s just purple with the game logo on it? And then you lay the location cards (which never move...) on top of it? It’s just weird...and frustrating due to the missed opportunity to capture more of the visual charm and appeal of the movie.

Its a bit samey and very dependant upon the shuffle of the deck, one early game we found very few ways to 'reveal' the items we needed to collect until about halfway down the deck and thus we were in a bad position and inevitably lost. A second game that followed was much easier and faster and we won convincingly because cards came up in a better order. Its strange as it has no scaling, whether you are playing alone or with the full compliment of four players, gameplay and difficulty is exactly the same. collect all the items before the decks run out or lose. It is also a bit.... dissappointing..... that given all the amazing art from the film they could have chosen, each and everycard is simply the artwork of either Coraline or othermother, and they make up like 90% of this game. Traded in 2020 for Unlock, heroic adventures.
