Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
In games with a trading mechanic, the players can exchange game items between each other.

(Comments after 4 plays with an advanced beta version) Finally: A civ game in under four hours that delivers all I want in a civ game! Exploration? Check! Diverse terrain that influences your strategy? Check! Settlers and city building? Check! Resource collection? Check! City buildings and wonders? Check! Armies, Ships and warfare? Check! Barbarians? Check! Floods, Earthquakes and Volcano eruptions? Check! Cultural influence on other civilizations? Check! Missions (called objectives)? Check! Trading? Check! (although I'll admit it's hardly used in the current version of the game). The game is fun to win, but even more fun just to play. Your empire spreads, your cities become larger, and your civilization discovers advances such as Irrigation, Coinage, Siegecraft or Priesthood. The setting has a definite ancient feeling - it feels like being the leader of an advanced tribe circa 3000 BC, leading them to a glorious future. There is a significant amount of randomness, though, which might not appeal to some players. There are situations where an unlucky card draw, or bad die roll will set you back significantly. There are probably games where you just can't win because of continuous bad luck. But did I mention that playing the game alone is so much fun? Current rating of 9 could improve further after more plays.

Surprising long and super brutal take-that for what is a lighter Civ game - easily 4+ hours. Knocking out a player in a 4 hour game? Okay, hello 1985. The rulebook is poorly written and many rules are hard to find. The rules around moving units around the board are particularly annoying. Clearly this wasn't written by a native English speaker, but it did need a good English editor. Very good game, but long and is super fiddly. I'm sure it shines after the 3rd or 4th play.

I've only played this 2 player. I'd like to play more of this. Note: I should not have traded this away.
