In-game money is bet on different commodities in hope that that particular commodity will become the most valuable as the game progresses. Often the values of the commodities are continually changing throughout the game, and the players buy and sell the commodities to make money off of their investment.
Commodity Speculation
Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.

A wonderfully meaty (cows included) economic euro game with plenty of strategies and decision-making to be had. I've only played a few times, and only at 2 players, but had an absolute blast each time. The game might open up even more at higher player counts. The fluctuating market is a fantastic counterpart to expanding your production empire and creating your own goods, and managing your money is so important as it often determines how much you can do each turn. All in all, a brilliant game with tons of replayability.

I would much rather play the series that inspired Clans (Terra Mystica and Gaia Project), but this is a enjoyable and more approachable alternative. The game really shines when the market has a lot of buying and selling activity, and makes it feel unique from it's bigger brothers. I wish the game was more evenly balanced in terms of scoring, 70% of your points will come from contracts which makes the end of round scoring less interesting.

Economic game where players produce or buy goods on the market, accomplish contracts, and scoring tiles. Each player has a player board with different goods and animals which can be placed on the main board. The free spots on the players board show what is produced which makes it easy to keep track the production (similar to Eclipse). + Artwork and components + Different clans + Compact game box + High variability: modular board, scoring tiles, clans + Scoring tiles in different order each game (like in Terra Mystica) + Tiles have different costs + Commodity market: buy or sell goods - good alternative to producing + Contracts (give goods to receive goods and boni like in Marco Polo) + Scales well with all player counts + Rather quick playing time for such a complex game + Easy to teach for such a complex game (intuitive mechanics and theme) + Rules are well written # Theme is okay (Scotland is cool) - Strategy for the specialized clans may be too hardwired (replayability may suffer over time) - Set-up - Quite some math involved Similar games: * Gaia Project or Terra Mystica (similar economic and tile placement mechanics, more complex)
