Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.

What an odd mix this game ended up being. The focus row, and how it integrates into the tech tree, is as fun and novel as advertised. I'm somewhat amenable to the expansion and maturation process of your cities. The rest is either neutral or drags the game down. Each turn plays briskly, but can feel too incremental. The wonders are great, but building one also rubber bands a little bit if you cross eras. The asymmetric player powers seem to have less impact than map position. The game's arc is strangely a combination of swift (e.g., the focus bar and the action cards); slow (e.g., actually bordering another player); and capricious (e.g., early game barbarian movement mixed with initial board placement). Add in the victory conditions that seem balanced to fit a targeted game time, as opposed to being interesting strategically, and you are left with a game that straddles good and bad. This is an over-generalization, but this game feels like an optimization euro that has been given an ill-fitting suit of a civilization game. As an optimization euro with a civilization setting, Antiquity is better and has a smaller rule set. Scythe also comes to mind as an offering that fits its setting better. If I want a civilization game, I strongly prefer, at least, more immediate player interaction or a greater sense of exploration.

+ Terra Incognita SOLO REVIEW: I haven't tried the expansion yet. The rules are a bit "oof" to remember... so many little things to learn. Once I did, it plays very nicely with official solo rules. I can say I'm pretty satisfied. I'm excited to eventually implement the expansion UPDATE: Increased from 7 to 9 with expansion. Amazing improvement, great solo play with fanmade rules. I don't think you'll find a better Civ game, for solo or multi player. One point off for just how much effort it took to grok the rules + solo AI.
