Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.

Fantastic Main Mechanism. Unforgivable though on lack of Warfare and player interaction. Barbarians useless. Would rather play the video game. Just average in the end, way over rated right now.

It is a nice, light game and does not have great complexity, you can teach it to someone and enjoy it at the moment.

This rating includes the expansion. Classic FFG production where none of the rules are particularly complicated, but there are a lot of them. Also throws in the classic diplomacy cards (a la TI) and tiny power cards via Wonders (a la Runewars). Overall though, I was pleasantly surprised by this. The turn-to-turn gameplay is fun and fast: Pick a card, do what it says. But planning it out is quite a little puzzle thanks to the ingenious assembly line system, one that that's all about timing and reading your opponents intent. It also captures that feeling of early game Civ, where you're mostly growing, expanding, and building wonders (with minimal player conflict). It's much more plesant than other Civ games (Eclipse, Clash of Cultures), though there's some teeth if you decide to be more aggressive. I wasn't as sure on the end game. The race is nice (no end game scoring!), but also a bit anti-climatic. It felt like the game ended right as we were getting into each other's business, but that could be because we were all new to the game. Overall, I'd put it just behind Spaces Empires 4x and Eclipse, but this one is much faster and more accessible. Way better than Clash of Cultures.
