Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Pretty enjoyable game of resource management but I think will suffer in the fact that to do well you have to go do a certain path. I'm not sure there are enough paths to delve into.

Purchased in Geekmarket. 1st play - solo play for rules consideration and teaching prep. After the first play, I had a much better understanding of what the mechanics of the game were doing. There was a lot I could not understand just by reading the rules. Playing it, it became clear that part of the fun is in exploring what these mechanics do. Rules mistakes included - Science bonus pays out in 3rd and 5th rounds IN ADDITION to the science earned every round by academies (the iconography made me think the academies only paid out in the 3rd and 5th rounds). 1-5-18 - Downgraded to a 7. Mechanics can be a bit fiddly in play. Still a good game, but I'd play several other games before suggesting it. Still want to play it more, but with a tight economy of time, it is not getting played. 5-18-18 - Received an offer for Trade. Traded for Alhambra: Big Box

Ryan Lauket's first major board game and it shows. The art is fantastic, the mechanics solid but unremarkable. The game is good but lacks Ryan's unique touch that would crop up in later games.
