Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Excited to finally get this one to the table, but all I can say is I was very disappointed in the game play. Way too long and slow for what you get out of it. Too repetitive, not a whole lot of variety. If I am going to play a Ryan Loaukat game, it will definitely be Above and Below. I really wish this one was better! Sold on GeekMarket for $60 on 8/3/16

A couple plays in, I can say that I've enjoyed it. It's unusual to have a deckbuilder with two separate decks, though some find it too much of a hassle. Overall a solid deckbuilding game that's mostly a euro, but also includes the ability to directly attack other players, which again may be a turnoff for some of the euro crowd. I really like the initiative system for this game, too. Update: Ended up selling it. I tried playing this with several different groups. While no one disliked it, no one was particularly thrilled with it either. I get the impression that the two separate decks per player, which you must order, combined with the ability to purchase anything from your pile, both felt too clumsy and created too much downtime. I'm a bit disappointed as I thought there were some cool mechanisms here, but it seems most eurogamers just aren't into it.

Ryan Lauket's first major board game and it shows. The art is fantastic, the mechanics solid but unremarkable. The game is good but lacks Ryan's unique touch that would crop up in later games.
