Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Worker (dice) placement game by S J Macdonald (Architects / Paladins of the West Kingdom) with secret dice deployment. Pros: + Components: custom wooden resources + Drafting that shapes your strategy at the beginning of the game + Players reveal their plan how to use their workers (dice) similar to Dungeon Petz. Workers can be sent outside to the planet or placed on your tableau (similar to Anachrony). In clockwise order, each player places a die and potentially blocks spots (push your luck, change of plans). + Many opportunities to change rolled dice. There are also spots where lower pip dice are useful. + Workers can be permanently "scarified" to score points and gain additional boni (similar to Myrmes, however, players can get new dice more easily in this game). + Resource management is the big part of the game in order to score points by communicating with the local Aliens or build new projects. + Upgrading tableau so that own actions get stronger or more flexible. + One strong special ability for each player due to the assigned leader (similar to Marco Polo) + If you pay resources to fulfill contract cards you gain victory points and a special ability for the rest of the game. + Point to point hex movement to increase harvested resources on the planet (each round). Moving harvester on the planet is satisfying: it is expensive but it generates a good amount of passive income each round. + Variability due to tableau upgrades, unique leader powers, alien ability, contract cards, harvester board. + Solo mode with AI (can be used in multi player games as well) + Quick game + Compact game box (1st edition) Neutrals: # Rather weak theme # Unique art style # 2nd ed. has Allies expansion, improved artwork, changed terminology, and a bigger game box. # Player interaction by blocking worker placement spaces. # Thinky because of some math and optimizing your dice allocation due to their pip values. # Some downtime because there is some calculating necessary. # Not for gamers who do not like if their plans get screwed by other players' workers (first come, first serve) # The number of resources required in this game can be high: there may not be enough resource tokens which is why 5x or 10x multiplier cards need to be used. # If you communicate with Aliens, you will loose a die permanently for victory points, get one Alien action, and potentially gain a bonus (if not already taken). However, at some later point in the game, you will not gain a bonus any longer, but you also have to pay additional cost. Cons: - Drafting and positioning at the beginning of the game may influence overall game experience (runaway leader). - Random points (between 4 and 8) for the crystal hex tiles at the end of the game (may be explored in advanced). Similar games: * Trickerion (complex worker placement with secret deployment, worker have different values) * Dungeon Petz (worker placement with secret deployment / bidding, no dice, but multiple workers can be sent at the same time) * Anachrony: different types of workers that a either deployed on your player board or outside (no secret deployment). * The Artemis Project (quicker dice placement game, some mean player interaction) * Euphoria (worker placement with worker bumping, cool theme)

Probably a nice game, which I most likely did not explore the strategic depths of it, but I come more and more to the conclusion, that I don't like Dice Placing games. As well the automa was, well, not bad, but not for me. Then setup was too fiddly for me and sometimes you handle soo many small game pieces, it was ridiculous.

Very great solo as different difficulty against a real AI opponent. Many options available and many ways to find ways to win. With 3 or 4 people the games take some longer time, but its worth it.
