Caverna: Cave vs Cave – Era II
Expansion of:
Caverna: Cave vs Cave
30m - 60m
1 - 2 Players
Ages 12+
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.
Tile Placement
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

On the one hand, it adds a much needed layer of complexity. It also adds strategy at multiple levels - not only are there four new actions, but each action will come with one of four additional actions. And then on top of that, gold scoring changes, Era I points end up worth twice what they would otherwise be, and the extra goods make it feel more like regular Caverna. On the other hand, it makes the entire Cave vs Cave experience far, far longer and I haven’t yet tried the “quick” start as it doesn’t look that quick. Plus, AP on Annie’s side means that the game drags for me. This is another reason why I have avoided the quick start, since she could easily take 2-4x longer than me for each of her drafts.

Really disappointed with this expansion. It starts with "to play this expansion, start by playing a complete unmodified game of the base game", then play 4 more rounds with this new stuff. So it makes the game double the length, and it doesn't change or vary the original experience at all. It merely tacks on more play time at the end. It's still serviceable, but the "era I" experience desperately needs a randomized expanded buildings roster, and maybe even the same for actions. It would have been so simple and so good to have a way to make the game less predictable and more repayable. Instead we got this thing which doubles the play time and still has a static list of buildings and actions. The daft mode to skip phase 1 seems interesting, but feels like a cop-out to actually addressing a bad expansion idea/concept. They should have made this a stand alone game, kept the length of the original with new mechanics & resources, done. Either way, Era 1 still needs a proper expansion to ensure replayability. At last the price is ok, it fits in the base box. I guess it's nice to have more turns to crank your existing engine, but that's not worth the additional playtime.

Playing solo, I would always play with that expansion. With 2 players, it depends on how much time we have...and with somebody playing that game for the first time, I would also have the first play without Era II.
