I found this game to be a bit too random for my liking. My gaming group likes it, so I'll play it if suggested, but I'd never be the one to suggest it. Resources are determined by dice rolls matching planets you have colonized. I don't mind such a mechanic as a smaller part of a game's economy, but I'm not a fan of it being the overwhelming majority of a game's resource generation. Add to that the number of turns it takes to go explore new planets producing resources you need only to discover it yields that resource on a rarely rolled number...that's just not really for me. The encounters are interesting, in theory, but they are also almost completely random. You can mitigate results a little by upgrading your ship, but you have no real way of knowing which stat a given encounter will check/test beforehand or which option will even lead to such a check. They often ask you to offer 0-3 resources. Sometimes the "good" result comes from offering nothing. Just as often it comes from offering 3 resources. Or 2. Or 1. You can also get robbed if you have more than seven resources and roll a seven on your turn, so saving up, or even have fortuitous rolls from opponents between your turns can come back to randomly bite you.

I think this is a downgrade from Catan in almost all ways. Catan gets a bad rap for being random - but this is another level. You keep the die roll for resources, add randomness to how far you can move, whether you'll have an encounter, what encounter you'll have, the results of the encounter, what resources you'll find. You also just get random cards as part of your resources (why? no idea). We played the beginning board, but it looked to me like you could play random locations too. The rockets are overproduced randomizers (they could easily be replaced by a deck of five cards). The powers you can get from aliens can definitely feel overpowered. Let's be clear: I actually like base Catan. It's engaging, short, and allows you to always be working towards a concrete next goal. This is just a much worse version.
