Pattern Building is a system where players place game components in specific patterns in order to gain specific or variable game results. For example: placing chips on 2, 4, 6, 8 on a board gets the player an action card they can use later in the game.
Pattern Building
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.

Set collection nested with set collection that's then combined with a somewhat basic spatial puzzle and point-to-point board movement. The game incentivizes planning, but also throws some randomness onto the board that limits the horizon of the planning. It's functional and inoffensive, but there's little in the way of a pop--after a session of Castell, I'm looking to move onto a different game. I care little about who won or lost, or why. Nor do I care about what I did to achieve my score. The actions that a player performs are incremental and a little unexciting, and this can make the game last too long for what it is. Further, the board play seems a bit too open, as players are alone in competitions too often, and no matter the play count. Overall, there's some originality here--the closest comparison I can come up with is Finca, but this is more complex than Finca. Castell just comes off as unexciting and overlong in the actual practice of its game play.

This game has such a unique style! First of all, the setup is incredibly variable. Second, the gameplay is very straight forward while also being wonderful think-y. Oh, and the festivals introduce essentially a minigame into the middle of each round! This one really surprised me! What an awesome game!

Excellent, quick playing set collection and manipulation game that is quick to learn, easy to play but very gamey. A medium+ in medium clothing. The theme is very strong. Fun!
