Carson City: The Card Game
30m - 45m
1 - 5 Players
Ages 12+
This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

Not a lot of decision making. Just what you bid. Luck dependent on the cards that come up. The art and iconography is familiar to those who know Carson City.

I was attracted to the game due to the bidding and tableau building. I wanted a game like Honshu with less rubber banding. The tableau building is less interesting than I expected. The placements are fairly obvious. That's balanced a bit by the character cards on offer, and the way they give strategic focus/flexibility. The game seems to lack the tightness and interesting wrinkles that are commonly found in a Knizia auction game. Carson City: The Card Game just sort of progresses and you make do with what you get from the auction.

I love the theme, the simultaneous card draft and the tableau building, but I don't enjoy having to use dummy players if you are playing with less than four players.
