Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

I have to say I didn't like this game very much. The fact that you may displace someone else at the whim of a die isn't a mechanic I enjoy. Some rounds I literally placed the bare minimum of workers to keep a lot of guns and have better chances to displace other players from the few actions that mattered (despite the big number of spots available). A worker placement game where I place three workers and keep 10 in my reserve unused? What? In the last round I literally said "we can simply roll a die to see who gets to win the game, it really doesn't matter much where you place your workers/if you place more workers". And so it was, 50/50 chance of winning the game. The iconography was mighty confusing too for a game of this weight. This is a game that, while having a lot of variability, it doesn't really have a lot of replayability because at least for me the game itself isn't very satisfying. I'd play it again if it came out, but I think there's way better designs out there. In particular Three Kingdoms Redux for an interactive worker placement with conflict. I sound like a broken record. It is miles better than games like these and sadly way less known. Things the game did well: the theme is fun, the mechanics and mechanisms are fairly straightforward, there's a lot of options (not sure if all equally viable, depending on the map), the production is good. Surprise: I went to check the prices for this and I'm flabbergasted. Crazy!! Would rather own TI4
