Cape May
60m - 120m
1 - 4 Players
Ages 13+
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.

Positives: The art and components are great. I especially like the big chunky house miniatures. The rules are easy to understand but provide enough depth to keep me interested. I feel like this is the perfect next step level of complexity that will keep a gamer interested while pulling non gamers deeper into the hobby. The thing that really makes it for me, though, is the action cards that basically give you better versions of the games main action (and are one time use). Without those I think the strategy might be a little bland. Negatives: The weight will keep some gamers from trying it. The theme is fine but honestly could have been about building just about anything. The area control scoring is more interesting at higher player counts (which is basically always the case anyway). Overall: The best way I can describe Cape May is pleasant. It's not going to blow anyone's mind away, but it felt just enough like a classic game to give it a nostalgia-laden feel while being just heavy enough to keep me interested. Definitely a keeper.

Enjoyable little city builder with an interesting mix of mechanics. More luck-driven than I like for this kind of game: some "activity" cards are far stronger than others, so some lucky draws will push a player to victory. It also feels old-fashioned in a way that I'm sure was unintended. The component quality is so-so, with an odd mix of big chunky plastic and inconsistent cardboard bits, some weirdly oversized and drab, others the opposite.

Feels to me like it needs a more going on, but would be a solid game otherwise, it just...needs more happening.
