Pattern Building is a system where players place game components in specific patterns in order to gain specific or variable game results. For example: placing chips on 2, 4, 6, 8 on a board gets the player an action card they can use later in the game.
Pattern Building
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

Fun abstract strategy, very strong solo mode. I just don't understand why they put a tabby cat on the cover instead of, you know, a calico.

Knowing how popular and simple this is and knowing the theme I didnt expect to like this: terraforming mars and wingspan are good games, however TM is not in my top 200 and wingspan is not in my top 400 for instance. This game is the real deal. In the same year, this game and Nova Luna have brought me back to 1988 when tetris caught fire. Quick, addictive puzzle games that soothe you and you want to play again after you are done. I could see this game making it into my 10’s someday……IF the replayability holds up. It was a MAJOR faux pa that you only get five of the seven cats in the retail version. Pretty upset about this as the only thing this game needed was more cats. The only complaint i can come up with is that it can be hard to arrange close, competitive games of Calico. If one player has an experience advantage they will always win as this game is pretty skillful and there are quite a few tricks to learn. Also, as always with these spatial puzzle games, some peoples brains are going to be conducive to this game and some people are just going to naturally struggle. These factors lead to some uneven win rates.

I've played at 3 and 2 players and it works really nice. With my 6 year daughter we don't play with the 3 tiles for extra combos and go only for cats and buttons. It's really nice and we share a very nice time. At 3 players there is some disengagement of the non active players since some turns could be longer, specially if the tiles for pickup provide with different possibilities. Thus players might have longer turns than others and it's a game very AP prone. I would have liked a bit more of player interaction, but overall it's really nice. It has very very nice components, thick tiles and the player boards are really nice sturdy double ones. I would have loved to have actual buttons instead of cardboard tokens, but this has given me a new project for blinging up my copy!
