Pattern Building is a system where players place game components in specific patterns in order to gain specific or variable game results. For example: placing chips on 2, 4, 6, 8 on a board gets the player an action card they can use later in the game.
Pattern Building
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

Clever game, good mix of mechanisms as tile placement and set collection. A not so simple game with very easy rules, sometimes it has tough decisions.

I liken this to an extreme 4D sudoku. The puzzle is challenging enough that I would probably enjoy it more as a solo game without the interference of other players. It is hard enough to randomly reveal the tiles you need for your board, without somebody accidentally or intentionally drafting it away.

The game's beauty lies in its scaling. It can be a light filler game, but also has the potential to be very think-heavy if your group is up to it. Either way, you put together a satisfying, pretty quilt on the board. The premise and aesthetics of Calico make it a really feel-good game, even if you lose!
