In Buru, you are a noble of the 14th century Majapahit empire, a powerful thalassocracy (maritime kingdom) that presides over the Indonesian archipelago. At the orders of the king Hayam Wuruk and his vizier, the great Gajah Mada, you have set out across the sea to expand the great mandala of Majapahit through commerce and diplomacy. You and your fellow nobles have recently arrived at the remote island of Buru, eager to earn your place in history. Here, you will dispatch your parties to the island to explore, trade, and pay your respects as you compete to win over Buru’s residents and ultimately gain the favor of the King himself.
Buru is a mid-weight, Euro-style board game for 1-4 players. Over five game rounds, you and your fellow players secretly deploy explorers to the four different regions of the island in order to gather resources, recruit islanders, set them to tasks, and pay tribute to the spirits revered there. The object of the game is to win the islanders’ esteem. You can earn esteem in many ways, primarily by paying tribute, but also by pleasing elders, tasking local nobles, fulfilling the king’s decrees, and holding a totem when any player pays tribute to that spirit.
At the end of the game, the player with the most esteem wins and is declared the new governor of Buru!

Production and components are really good. Gameplay is just boring. It doesn't really matter if you win a bet, you just have the same action, only not the best one (which you maybe couldn't have afforted anyway). And you will win another bet in one of the regions. It was presented as a mid-weight game but it's not! It is too simple, too random,... And yeah, some houserules and expansions can make it better. But we are just not interested in playing again. Antoher kickstarter who puts artwork and blingbling above a good gameplay. Will try to sell it.

Quirken
With the expansion, 7/10. The hidden bidding mechanic is super clever, especially combined with the stuff from the expansion. I seemed to be the only person in my group that didn't think the game was heavier than it was worth. This is a real table hog and doesn't need to be. Also, the rulebook wasn't terrible, but it did make things go a little less smooth than it might otherwise have gone. The expansion rulebook, because it's designed to be super modular, amplified this problem dramatically. Setting up the game with the recommended expansion modules was an excessive amount of flipping back and forth between setup sections. It would have been way better if they had a consolidated setup with optional steps, then put all the module gameplay together. All complaints aside, I think the game has some really neat stuff, and I would totally play again if my group was into it (they're not). The base game's hidden bidding with the bluffing potential from the expansion is really special, and I hope a streamlined reimplementation of the game happens someday. One last thought: the totems giving vp to the current owner when someone makes the corresponding offering was a neat passive VP stream and added some nuance to bluffing.
