Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.

There's an idea that could be used in a good game. This is not that good game. Seems like there's very little you can do with a bad hand. If you just don't win tricks, then you're going to lose, lose and lose a bit more. Indifferent.

Provisional rating, one play at Spiel. I enjoy trick-taking and climbing card games and I enjoyed this one, but thought it spoilt by one strange rule. The winner of a black hat trick can take back their own cards, which if they have a superior meld to play with the hat (e.g. four '1's) likely means they can keep winning tricks until the end of the hand. This needs some set-up to be advantageous - they need to have previously dumped most of their high cards to avoid additional penalty points - so the game isn't thereby broken, just less fun than it could be. My rating assumes a house rule e.g. black hat winner can't take back their own cards.

Fails on so many levels. You can't do anything sensible with a poor hand, which leads to getting left behind on the game board, which leads to not getting to move far enough once you finally win a trick. And the winner is evident several rounds before the end of the game.
