Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

[DY] Bituoku is a kitchen sink deign: it offers many elements for people to find fun in, but all those things can be hard to digest for mew players. It also leads to a lot of jargon to go along with all these disparate elements. In the game, you’ll play cards from a deck you’re building, use those cards to do actions or get resources. Those cards will unlock dice, which you can later use to do more actions, cross the river, and get more cards. Some of the actions are more interesting than others, but they all get you new things that you’ll use to try to get points from. Like most point salad games, you’ll get points from many different sources. You have to find your own lane in terms of where you want to get them. It’s not a bad game, but it’s a lot of different elements to get a grip on. I’ve heard it compared to heavy designs like a Lacerda game, but I don’t agree with that. There’s very little design synergy in this game, by that I mean there isn’t like a way that the actions in the game link together or lead you to a next action. There are a lot of choices you can make, but it’s really just a lot of point salad. It feels heavy because it’s a sandbox design with a lot of choices and few clear paths. Currently this is a 7 for me. I’ll need to play it more to judge better, but right now I think it’s just an ok design. Update 10/10/22 I've played it a couple more times, still only 2 players. I feel largely the same about it, but would like to try it with more players. It's a game that really pushes you to do well at everything. In some euro games you should pick one or two things and execute well on those. In Bitoku it seems like you really have to do that, but for 5 or 6 different mechanisms. I find it stressful to try and excel in many areas at once and still think it lacks an elegance of design.

Gameplay was good and actually surprisingly quick, but there is a LOT of stuff. If you like the puzzle of figuring out multiple how different systems and mechanics fit together, you'll probably like this one. Reminds me of a Lacerda game in a lot of ways. Wasn't really my thing though.

It took awhile to get through the rule book for not much complexity. I guess it went in depth really well so it’s a bit overdone but I’m a good way. Just faster to learn via video or in person. Game itself is interesting. Nothing mechanical but just in the pure amount of stuff. All cards, tiles, resources all deal with the same symbology. It’s a massive resource conversion point salad game. If your into that I can’t think of one like this. I did expect there to be some twist or deck building but really it’s just more stuff that gives you more stuff. Points in the end are awarded for pretty much everything. Not sure yet if you can go for one bigger strategy or have to do a little of everything to do well. The dice are more manipulation with no rolling. That was also a bit unexpected. The 4 main actions and crossing your dice across the river is interesting. It pairs well with the cards giving you actions. Production is off the charts. Excellent components and quality. Silk printed wood components, thick cardboard. Feels like a lacerda for half the price. Lacking in the complexity and gameplay perspective. Overall we really enjoyed it because we like resource conversion and point salad. I did expect there to be more mechanics, deck building, dice rolling but none of that was found here. Hopefully we can get it to the table for a few sessions at a time because the reading time is high.
