Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.
Tile Placement
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Bonapart
For me a surprise game of the year. Relatively simple rules, but a lot is going on in the game. The base mechanics are interesting and consistent with the theme, so you don't feel like the designer had a mechanic and tried to find a theme for it. Good, thinky game.

Very crunchy and prone to AP, this is a point-generous Euro with tight mechanics that are blended into the theme well. It's a tough one with 4 players as turns are complex and the decision space is perhaps too broad - each pair (or triple) offering many interlocking and impactful results. There might be a seating order problem as well - setting up players with placement for high scoring situations with buildings or depleting/blocking options with a feeling of despair between each ("Thanks for that placement - I'm now scoring 30 points" vs "You took what I was going to do - now I have NO idea what to do!") or intentionally/inadvertently ending the round leaving you wanting for a Cerda increase or general scoring positions. However, it's good and lovely with clear iconography - it just might be too much for me. I'd like to play it again certainly to find out!

As someone who generally doesn't like heavy euros, I enjoyed this a lot. The theme strongly appeals to me, and the shared board does create meaningful interaction and interesting decisions (building vs getting the actions you want). Turns are long and thus the game is AP-prone, but I suspect this will get better with more plays.
