Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

I have to start by saying I really enjoyed this game but I don't know if it makes sense to own it, primarily because it is designed for 4+ players. We played it with 2 players and it worked really well but it is one of those games where it loses maybe too much of something. With two players is almost simultaneous play and you both get to build pieces of the gate solo and it is almost like you are playing a worker placement game solo with the occasional strategy talk. The other thing I struggle with is the worker placement aspect of rolling a dice to see if you get that resource. It would have been so much cooler if it was a dice worker placement game and you rolled them and you placed them according to their pips. I realize everything would need to be rebalanced but that would feel more like a coop because you could talk strategy based on everyones rolls. As it stands you are only committing to try and get resources which makes the game a little more random as you could have really good luck or bad luck which changes the difficulty. I like that the cards control the difficulty but something like pandemic is so finely controlled in how you build the deck that it is less random than you think. Then you take this game and you could have 4 special misfortune cards come out in a row and roll bad and lose the whole thing because of it. The game itself though was so fun. It is very thematic and watching the island sink and losing those actions can be brutal. The gate powers that you build are awesome, so are the player abilities, and the library cards. All the locations are very important early on in the game but there are limited overall strategies on things you can't really afford to lose. Because of that the game will feel similar each time because there is not another path to victory or random setup. Something like pandemic each game will feel different because you are on a different part of the map and certain locations or diseases will be more or less important. Here the island will sink more or less in some spots but there nothing else to focus on other than perform as many big actions as you can before it sinks. This is clearly a 4 player game and it shows with all the 2-3 changes to simulate a 4 player experience. The player count is the best thing about this game and playing it as one big team I can imagine would be a much better experience because you have to cooperate to do anything. You are more limited on workers and you need to build together and that is what I wish we could have seen at two players. Don't get me wrong, 2 players is fun, but I think I would tire of it after 2-3 plays as it ends up being the same thing. If you add more players the overall idea is the same but each person's experience will feel different because they can help in different unique ways. I think if it was dice worker placement like I mentioned above it would have been more strategic at two players and force more cooperation rather than pursue the obvious. The price point of this game is another challenge as it is very expensive for what it is and I wish it was a little less deluxe so more families could enjoy it. This feels like the next best step of a family that has out grown pandemic but I have a really hard time recommending it for less due to the cost and gameplay changes. I will still probably try and pick it up in case I can ever play it with a group.

I got rid of all my co-op games (Forbidden island/ Desert, Pandemic, but kept this one. Awesome components. Vincent Dutrait art! I just need the neoprene mat.
