Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
In storytelling games, players are provided with conceptual, written, or pictorial stimuli which must be incorporated into a story of the players' creation.

After 5 gamea Light and streamlined Dungeon Crawler Fresh theme, good story, nice minis. Great tablepresence, easy rules
Astinex
As a one off game, it's a decent enough dungeon crawler. As a legacy game it had its moments, but overall lacked a real challenge. Unless pressured, I would be unwilling to play agsin.

My impressions of Arkeis after playing for the past 5 days are a mixture of positive and negative. The concept of an Ancient Egyptian steampunk, tomb raiding dungeon crawler is a good one. I like the 3D terrain and the minis were fun to paint and good quality. The artwork is excellent. I like the scenario boxes (similar to Cthulhu Death May Die) and storage isn't terrible. My issues are with the gameplay. I love dice chuckers but I found Arkeis a bit boring with custom dice against enemy stats. There is no real strategy involved and I felt very little immersion in the story or any connection with the characters. You have to go into the areas where the enemies are in order to explore tokens, which might also spawn enemies. Throw in trauma cards to restrict attacks, enemies that require doubles to damage and the ability to spawn more enemies and it just becomes a boring grind. My other issue is that it isn't always clear what the objectives for a scenario are, so you just keep fighting and searching until a card tells you that it is complete. I haven't tried the free play option, so I may go back to the game to try that, but for now it is going on the shelf.
