Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

I really wanted to like this game but there are just too many fun sucking mechanics in here. Characters can be potentially 'pinned' to another character for most of a match taking them out of the action. A character can be killed before they act which means not only do they lose their turn (which is fine) but they have less energy to do things for the next 2 turns. Winning the turn often means you get more cards than the other team. All of this isn't so bad in a game that takes an hour but for me it often took closer to 2.5 hours per match. Also using the default teams with the base set characters gives a clear initiative advantage to one side which for the default game mode (Assault) is a huge help. This can be fixed with drafting but it doesn't sit well with me. The character design is excellent and the variable powers interplay well I just wish the game allowed me to have more fun with it. Making and executing a cool plan and thinking around problems are too often cancelled by the core game systems. I feel there is a good game here but the time it would take for us to dig it out is too much. This game shouldn't be as frustrating as it has turned out to be.

Great arena combat style game. Very fluid and tactical. After ten games this is in my top 3 best miniature games played in the last 20 years.
