Pattern Building is a system where players place game components in specific patterns in order to gain specific or variable game results. For example: placing chips on 2, 4, 6, 8 on a board gets the player an action card they can use later in the game.
Pattern Building
A time track mechanism is a variable player-turn order mechanism by which the player who is last on the time track goes next. The function of this mechanism can allow a player to have multiple sequential turns due to being last after each one.
Time Track

A well-balanced, tight euro-style game with interesting mechanics, a strong magic infused thematic base, and high-quality components. Archmage offers a creative blend of area control on a randomized hexagon structured playing board, coupled with a spell-deck builder that relies on the advancement of apprentices on the player’s Tower board. The recessed slots and the Venn diagram/colour wheel approach on the Tower board make for a truly pleasant gaming experience. All of our games have been very close, the efficiency of the players’ decision-making in the crucial final few rounds ultimately determining the winner. The round tracking mechanism of the planets slowly moving into alignment is quite a unique game enhancement, provided the players consistently remember to move a planet to begin each turn. Archmage has a higher level of complexity, so Tim’s straight-forward, well-sequenced instructional videos found here on BGG are recommended. This is a game that requires repeated plays to fully appreciate its’ depth, balance, and ingenuity. Very pleased to have added this game to our collection, and look forward to the increasing options provided by the upcoming KS expansion.

Going into this game, I was told that you really have to work hard to get and even keep spells so right out of the gate, I knew I wasn't going to be spell-slinging like many magic rich fantasy games. I mean, spells are the end game victory points. This game really makes me feel more like a wizard trying to balance the variety of potential magics I can learn in this given universe. It is a really cool experience and feels really balanced with the only real randomizer being the tile placement. This does greatly affect the game since it kinda helps you determine which magic school (or relics) to focus on but it is a good level of randomness for this weight of a game. I have played it two players, three players, and a partial single-player run through. I am excited to try out the expansion spells too. This was a great purchase! I am glad I picked this one up.

Still trying to get my daughter to give it ago. my impression is that it's underrated because you need to play it a few times before you can get a good game going
