Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Three plays - adds an unneeded amount of complexity to each mechanic that I don't really feel improves the strategy very much. Would rather Dwellings, but both are sorta luke warm at this point due to the unrewarding combat structure.

A friend of mine wanted to play this on TTS to determine whether to back the crowdfunding project. As a "pure" Eurogamer, I was definitely a bit skeptical upon reading the rules, given its reliance on card effects, random events, and seemingly direct combat. On top of that, we had somewhat recently done Dune: Imperium, another game that claims to blend Euro and American game elements, and you can check my review of THAT game to see how much I absolutely LOATHED it. This game, on the other hand, I loved. The ships are basically worker placement with a range limitation, and the combat is largely a way to get onto an occupied action space. I guess in this way you can get "punished" for being on places other people want to go, but you actually get decent compensation for losing combat, and there are definitely ways to set it up so that you WANT to lose. The one case where I could see this getting unpleasant is aggressively using combat to keep someone from developing, but that also comes at a cost to your own plans. The action cards are powerful and not necessarily fully balanced, but there aren't that many so you can learn what to expect, and relatively few are "take that". While not all events are equally good for you relative to other players, they are generally beneficial rather than harmful, so they aren't just unpleasantly throwing a wrench in your engine. And much like Yedo, you can get foresight/manipulation if you are willing to spend actions on it. Yedo is a great game to bring up because this is very comparable in terms of how it straddles the Euro/American line in a way that works for me. The only question is what level to back this at.
