This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding
Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
This mechanic usually requires players to pick up an item or good at one location on the playing board and bring it to another location on the playing board. Initial placement of the item can be either predetermined or random. The delivery of the good usually gives the player money to do more actions with. In most cases, there is a game rule or another mechanic that determines where the item needs to go.
Pick-up and Deliver
Player elimination occurs in multiple-player games (>2) when a player can be eliminated from the game and play continues without the eliminated player.
Player Elimination
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

2011-07-12 (rating 9): 9 for the game itself rather than this particular map. I just love this game. And it has the "catch them all" expansions feel so there is always something to look for. (Sadly the expansions are very expensive considering components quality.) I will rate the base map once I play it few times with more than 4 players.

Martin Wallace's best economic game. A turn opens with an intense bidding round followed by laying track tiles, shipping cubes, earning income and paying expenses. Plenty of opprotunity to jack your opponents. The only real weakness in the game is the urgency has a tendency to drop off in the middle to late game. Players are making so much money there's no threat of financial failure. Instead it becomes a game of who can be the richest of the rich.

Only played this twice and I am just pulling out of the 'hate curve' of this game. Maybe its just because I was the only newbie playing in games full of unhelpful sharks, but this seems to be a killer game to be a newbie in. Expect it to be painful. Update: played for the 3rd time and I just don't find this game fun. It doesn't click with my brain the way it does with some people and I find that a huge amount of mental effort is required to play well - and I just can't be bothered.
