Age of Rome: English Version (Kickstarter – Senator Pledge)
60m - 90m
1 - 4 Players
Ages 14+
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
Maneuvers that directly attack an opposing player's strength, level, life points or do something else to impede their progress.
Take That
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

This was a lot of fun. It is a well-produced game also, and although organizing it was a bit of a chore, the result is worth it! The gameplay is super simple, but the main gimmick of the rotating board is thoughtfully implemented. There is a bit of take-that, and it is core to the gameplay so you really can't omit it, unfortunately. I will say that the rulebook was not great - it made a fairly simple and straightforward game seem a lot more complicated than it needed to be. However, once you learn how it all works, it is a pretty fast game to play and can be quite enjoyable with any player count (even solo)!

Amazing production and table presence let down by what seems like an immature/undercooked design. It's good, but not great. With interesting flow, but then some underbaked elements and a little too luck dependent. It's good, and we enjoyed it overall. I'd happily play it a few more times. It's light-medium weight and feels like the sort of game that would have been a real hit about 10 years ago. There's some baffling choices made in how they have written the rulebook... over explaining some rules and then burying some critical rules in illogical places in small 'side note' boxes.

Deluxe, all-in, Emperor's edition. This game is a nightmare to pack/unpack. The components are very high quality and the game looks great. It's a fairly simple city-building and worker-placement game. There is one primary innovation that adds some interest - that's the rotating board which gives you a different sector to work in each round. There's some subterfuge that you can attempt but it isn't reliable and is likely going to rub some people the wrong way. In the end, it's just not a good enough game to warrant a $150 edition. At $40 or even $60, I'd be a lot happier with what it offers. Another major issue is that it really requires 4 (and only 4) players.
