I like the innovation tiles and tech tiles, but I think I still prefer the less constraining spatial aspects of Gaia Project.

Terra Mystica was a favorite I still quite like, but just find it hard to play because people who know it and like it usually know it better than me and the playing field is very uneven. If people don't know it, it's long and I'll probably crush them. Like that, AoI is a giant Euro where each player gets a unique faction and builds on a map, terraforming land to their preference and getting in each other's space all over. Age of Innovation added tons of variability in setup which can greatly influence drafting races and related stuff at the beginning and game play throughout, depending on what is in play. I see it as Kingdom Builder style setup for a big Euro game and it worked well. AoI is even longer than TM, but also better... for me, it's better because I felt like I was less likely to get stuck and - even if I'm not going to win - I've got plenty to do. Gaia Project improved on TM, but I like the TM theme better so I'm glad to see this. It may not be the easiest game to get to the table, but I think I'll see it happen around me.

An excellent iteration on Terra Mystica and Gaia Project! I like how everything is modular but still asymmetric. It feels a lot more balanced and more flexible. I'd say this one just about shelves Terra Mystica - AoI is superior in almost every way. The only thing AoI is missing, besides the agnostic factions (the expansion ones that don't have a preferred terrain type among the 7 basic types), is the variable endgame scoring. (Expansion maybe?) I suppose AoI also doesn't have the second Terra Mystica expansion, but eh. Two thumbs up! Strongly recommended! EDIT: In my 2nd game of AoI I bumped both spades and shipping to the top. The spades were amazing! It transformed a lot of disparate bonuses into a strange equality. I know this can occur during Terra Mystica too, but TM lacks the flexibility for the other bonuses to make this so apparent. For example, the 2-spade Palace tile was equal to the 2-tool Palace tile! The 6-power double spade was inferior to the 4-power 2-tool power action (both of which are in TM). Also, I feel like the terrain mats aren't quite equal. I *really* like the gray one. The spades one (brown/plains) isn't nearly as interesting despite appearing otherwise. There are other considerations, but I'm looking at them in a more critical light and I think some are just better. (That game, the gray one yielded 17 coins in income over the course of the game. That's a lot!) Also, the player count can significantly affect the gameplay. 3p felt wide open and had lots of options while the 4p was very tight and tricky. In that one (the 4p), we only hit the innovation tiles late in the game (round 5-6) because books were very rough. Part of that had to do with the 4-power action tile being on a 3-bump space instead of a book space. *shrug* I still love this game. Maybe more so. I WANT TO PLAY THIS MORE!
