Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Fun worker placement game with an interesting theme, and a more historical take on the setting than some games.

I really enjoy AFFLICTION: Salem 1692, and so far everyone I have introduced to it has also enjoyed it. It really drives home what the Salem witch trials were all about, and at least for me, makes me want to learn more about it, all while having fun! They did a great job of balancing out the game for 2, 3, and 4 players, so no matter how many people you are playing with, the experience, in my opinion, is basically the same. Lower player counts the better your engine and higher score is really the only difference.

Completely obtuse...it's almost like it's actively trying to drive people away. I love indie games, dark themes, odd designs, and uncomfortable art. I'll build any engine any day of the week. This should be my perfect game. It's not. I spent a week trying to play it, sort of. No one wanted to give it a shot, but I was determined because HALLOWEEN MONTH. Now, I should have known the game revolved around worker placement. Shame on me. I basically never like that mechanism. But still, even when I accidentally get a worker placement game there's usually enough there to help me understand why someone else might like a game. It never happened with Salem. Maybe the appeal is the historical accuracy? I could care less about that, and if anything it made the game harder to play. It's like watching the Lord of the Rings movies - everyone has basically the same name and you can't tell them apart because they all have little beards and are covered in mud. Only pilgrims instead. Just play The Bloody Inn.
