Abyss: Kraken
Expansion of: AbyssThe Smugglers Guild settled in the heart of the giant sea creatures cemetery, in the darkest depths of the Deep kingdom. In this disconcerting necropolis, with the help of mysterious Krakens, representatives of Guilds are trading NEBULIS, wonderful black pearls, that are the unofficial currency of the realm. That’s money stained with blood. They accelerate your way to power, but be careful, because those who are caught with possession face a terrible fate!

Expands base game with additional lords and a new "black pearls" currency that score negative. Well thought out limitations on how black pearls can be spent add an interesting new layer to the game.

Adds a bunch of cool bits, but not 100% necessary. Really enjoy the hot potato aspect. Quick route to getting powerful lords early, but you need to have a strategy to dump the contraband on your neighbors before the end. Solid addition to one of my favorite games.

Abyss: Kraken is a fun expansion, but I don't think it's necessarily a must buy. The new black pearls (dirty money) add a fun twist, as do the new Kraken cards that function as wilds for the purpose of buying lords (although they earn you black pearls which are a bitter sweet reward). There are also a lot of new lords added to the lord deck, as well as new areas to acquire. In my opinion, this expansion doesn't modify any of the main mechanics of the base game. It adds extra content and a new layer of strategy with the black pearls, but everything else pretty much remains the same. If you want Abyss to be turned up a notch, I think it's worth a buy. I'm happy with it because it brings it closer to being a heavier weight game (my cup of tea).
