2 - 5 Players
Ages 12+
This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

1861/1867 errata Component errata: As mentioned previously, there were a handful of minor component issues. Names of 1861 Major Company stock certificates being swapped "Moscow & Kazan" "Moscow, Kiev, Voronezh" (NB: Colors and tokens were still correct) Moscow-Brest yellow line on charter instead of green line Add 1861 icon to Kharkov & Kiev tiles (these were not misprinted, rather a graphic design miss as these 2 tiles are not used in 1867) Of the above issues, the one that I think could have a material impact on gameplay are the swapped names on the Major Company certificates. A file with corrected shares was provided on BGG when this error was noticed. As a part of the Shikoku 1889 Kickstarter campaign, you can have these cards replaced if you pledge at least $1. This is mainly so you can get access to the pledge manager where I will provide a free add-on for a set of 18 replacement cards. Rulebook errata: I'm very glad I waited as long as I did for the rulebook errata. As I've said before, I am not a fan of rushing out a new version of the rulebook. The last thing I want is 15 versions of the rulebook floating around with slight variations and tweaks among them. I am also not a fan of going back to make changes multiple times as that can often lead to inadvertently creating other issues in the file. Here is a link to the draft version. Once we go through QA, the official revised version will be released. Some rules were missing or incorrect, but many of these are updates are actually clarifications rather than overtly incorrect rules. If there is enough demand, I'll consider doing a print run of the new rulebooks that I would make available as a paid add-on for the Shikoku 1889 Kickstarter. Below is a list of the issues/clarifications that have been updated: “1867 only - In Phase 8, Major Companies may exchange a train to get a 50% discount of face value on another train.” -- This rule was added to section 8.11. Private Companies are nationalized at the start of Phase 6 if they have not done so already. The owner (player or company) receives face value from the bank for the Private Company. -- This rule was added to section 10 Upgrading green cities to brown: When upgrading a city tile from green to brown, the placing company must use as many exits as possible. -- This rule was added to section 8.6.1 1867 tile manifest issues: tile #625 can upgrade into tile #70, the image for tile #X7 is incorrect --These issues have been corrected Read as written, the rules for the compulsory train purchase do not actually allow players to take loans if they can afford a train with the current treasury. Even though the situation where this would apply is less common, the wording was technically incorrect -- This was updated to clarify that a company may choose an available train it wants to purchase and then take loans. This is most typical in situations where a Major Company is started in Phase 8 and would need to take loans to afford an 8-train or a 5+5E train (as opposed to the cheapest available train in the Train Yard in Phase 8, a 2+2). The graphic of the nationalization example showed the charter of MV instead of the charter for MNN -- This was corrected 1861, if the RSR has no train, it will attempt to buy the cheapest available train (Open Market or Train Yard). If the RSR has a train, it will attempt to purchase the cheapest available train from the Train Yard. -- This is to cover a less common situation where a 3-train might be in the Bank Pool at the start of Phase 4, (meaning the RSR would purchase the 3-train in the Bank Pool over the 4-train in the Train Yard) but this rule has been added to section 8.13 to cover this situation. 1861 Private Company coordinates -- Coordinates for Odessa and Moscow were corrected in section 3.1 Stock Price Token Movement did not account for situations where the stock token moved up instead of right, down instead of left, or did not move -- Added clarifications in section 4.3 9.1a change “in its place” to “in the same space” and removed “blue and teal” Minor Companies are allowed to re-enter hexes previously visited when checking for merger connectivity. (i.e. you can merge Minor Companies that are located on separate city spots within the same hex like Moscow, Kiev, Montreal) -- Updated in section 9.2 “Lay track” -> “Tile lay” and “Upgrade track” -> “Tile Upgrade” -- The rulebook language regularly swapped between these two usages. This was made more consistent throughout the rulebook. RSR token in Montreal/Moscow in Phase 8 -- This was intentionally omitted originally as the reservation is on the tile and charter. By request, this has been added to sections 8.13 and 11 to be clearer. 9.2 says: “All owners of Minor Companies must agree to the Merge.” -- Updated to “All owners of participating Minor Companies must agree to the Merge.” 9.2 says: “Cities in the same hex that do not have connected track (e.g. Moscow or Toronto) are not considered to be connected.” -- Updated to: “Separate cities in the same hex that do not have connected track (e.g. Moscow or Toronto) are not considered to be connected.” 8.6.1 says: “Track may not connect to: the map’s edge, a red or blue border between hexes” -- Updated to: “Track may not connect to: the map’s edge, a thick black border between hexes” Removed cheat sheet -- Upon reflection, I came to realize that it’s not a great experience to open up a brand new rulebook and see a wall of text with print the size of a sesame seed. A cheat sheet also will typically abridge the rules which may lead to conflicts with the full game rules. I might upload this as a separate document to BGG instead, but candidly I don't know how valuable such a large cheat sheet is.
