This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

I've only played 67 so far but WOW. I freaking love this game. The essential question seems to be how do I convert/merge my minors to survive through the 3 and 4 trains? The focus is on the early development of the map and tactics regarding train shuffling/buying. This makes for a crazy fun front loaded decision space and a relatively short game that feels like a complete experience. I can see why this is an appropriate title for xx beginners (which I still consider myself one). There is virtually no complexity in the stock market rules and it seems you're just trying to buy the best shares then keep them for the rest of the game. The tile laying is very friendly and tokening after a major is formed is expensive. Merging/converting may be the most complex mechanic but it should be intuitive to any experienced gamer. Love love love this game. Possibly not the best xx of all time, but a hell of a lot of fun and a bit less heavy than some over titles. Finally got around to playing my physical copy. It's amazing but there are two pretty glaring issues. Let me say that again - for an 18xx game it's amazing. Everything is great looking. But.... The stickers look great but suck. Any token that needs to be double sided is an eye sore and starts to border on dysfunctional because the stickers don't fit - they're too big. This makes looking at tokens in the market unpleasant and if the tokens are stored in a bag could mean the stickers come off. The tile trays are nice and work when they're filled. But when there is only one or two tiles left - which you want in this game for say the Toronto green tile which is used every game - they're very hard to get out. Bummer.

The mergers are interesting. Fun just by virtue of being a not-totally-broken 18xx, which probably implies good design work. Some of the map features feel prone to non-decisions, either because track lays are obvious or because you got minors that literally are not allowed to lay track during the early game. Unnecessarily long.
