This game is nuts! I get into full-on panic mode when that Mechanical Beast starts imploding. And I am hardly ridden with guilt if I cannot save the Android along with myself. I usually play solo but my son enjoys a game now and then, too. We both love the mechanics and enjoy getting really into the story of what we are doing. Such a fun game!!

The core mechanisms here are wonderful, but the rules could use a little more refinement. That said, there is plenty of room to tweak things to get to a level of difficulty you enjoy, and there's a lot of puzzle here for a game that plays in 20 minutes. This is up there with my favorite Button Shy games for things that I will break out and play when I want something thinky but don't have time to break out something heavier.

Mechanical Beast by @sideroomgames is a puzzle game that was originally a print & play game where you’ll attempt to enter the great robot, shut it down, and escape! In the game, you’ll start the game by laying tiles, exploring the robot until you discover the control station. After that, the game changes as you shut the robot down and it starts to collapse. You’ll have to rescue any of the engineers you found still working inside, guiding them to the exit before the whole robot fully collapses into itself. We really loved how the game changes up halfway through, giving it a similar feel to Betrayal on the House of the Hill. In the first phase, you enjoy the exploratory process, planning how best to discover new tiles in order to give you the best advantage for the second phase, which is when the tension escalates and every move could spell life or death. Many rooms have gears and it is what helps the game shine. As the gears do different things based on where they are positioned, they can really change the game up and what may be an impossible scenario is made possible by a clever use of the gears to move the rooms around. We also appreciated having access to the android especially when playing solo as it provides a way to rescue your pawns if they get trapped. The android will also not automatically activate the control station and may give you the breather you need to reposition before the inevitable collapse Once the second phase is triggered, the rooms collapse in an interesting manner that will also have you planning ahead! It really makes you feel the tension and complexity of everything collapsing around you If you are enjoy solo/cooperative games and appreciate puzzles, do check out Mechanical Beast!
