Green Deal
60m - 90m
2 - 5 Players
Ages 10+
This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding
The simultaneous action selection mechanic lets players secretly choose their actions. After they are revealed, the actions resolve following the rule-set of the game.
Simultaneous Action Selection
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

Green Deal is challenging, in that it makes you try to keep a balance between various things, as your income, PR points, and the hatred of your friends when you steal the card they wanted.

Green Deal's rules aren't particularly complex and the game appears a bit dry at first (most of the game involves earning money and then spending it for points), but it is actually a game filled with very difficult decisions. It can be agonizing to give up taking a particularly compelling action card or spending all one's money on great cards to have no money for next round's auction for turn order. These tough decisions combined with some enjoyable mechanics (such as the "cooperate or compete" area control) make Green Deal a solid economic game.

Very nice game of compromises with several different game mechanics interweaving seamlessly. I was initially worried that the economic component and the environmental message would be too dominant but I was pleasantly surprised to find instead a well designed strategy game.
