Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.

2018-11-03 : Simultaneous building game that keeps players engaged all the time. A real filler with teeth. One of the hidden gems of Spiel 2018. As an extra bonus : the box says 2-4, but actually contains enough components to play with 5. 2018-11-10 : Third play and again a pretty enjoyable game, but a blemish on the game appeared : it has no tie breaker. Which is simply sloppy game design because it's pretty easy to come up with something : least number of vikings, least blocks used in the wall, most in-town coins, ... Anyway, a good evening closer.

A very neat and polished family game. It offers meaningful choices even in the simpleness of its rules. Fast and interesting. A kid and a gamer alike can definitely challenge themselves with it. It has more layers than it seems. It's a keeper.

Walls of York is a straight-forward roll and write design where players aim to enclose key locations on their map while completing one castle. There is not a whole lot to Walls of York. It is bare bones in its style. What it does offer, though, is its looks. Without a doubt, this has visual appeal. Choosing how many of each icon to surround is done though a dice tower (that mostly works) and each "drawn line" is made by placing small pieces reminiscent of LEGOs. The ideas work well enough, but if the dice command five or six of an item to be enclosed, then your castle will cover a majority of the map and satisfying decisions are lessened. This also can leadto a full player count running out of pieces before the end. At first, decisions seem key on maximizing future opportunities, but opportunities are so plentiful and its lack of any push-you-luck style combos that the genre is great at lessens importance on player actions. Walls of York does its job as a game that looks grander than it is. It will make players think they are playing something more with its nice components, but the game fails to entice when it has to stand on solely its mechanics.
