Insert Coin: rating = 9 (not too challenging, but very fun - especially for people of the right age to remember having played these games. also a good fit for families. best use of AR in these games to date) Sherlock Holmes: rating = 9.5 (love the fact that we're solving a murder - challenging, but doable. hope they do more mysteries like this in the future) Alice: rating = 8.5 (love the story and don't feel like inside knowledge was particularly important here unlike with previous Unlocks - some annoying puzzles, but probably more about a fit with how I/we think than real issues with the game...along with some careless errors) Overall rating of 9 for set

2023 review: took only 4 years to attempt another one in this box: Insert Coin. I don’t really know how to rate this. I had fun, but I think that’s only because I like hanging out with my wife and this is the equivalent of watching a Cannon film, except the Cannon film makes way more sense. The first in the series I played, squeek and sausage, I vaguely recall being good. The second I played, Sherlock, was pretty awful and downright seemed not playtested by my standards with poor and misleading art. This similarly seemed like they just didn’t play it with random people and see what could go wrong. And so much of it makes no sense at all. It’s a shame because this system is brilliant. But the designs themselves seem to vary wildly. I mildly enjoyed this (in a cheesy way) until the end, where it took a swift nose dive. 3/10 (it was maybe 5/10 until the end). Currently putting the box at 2/10. Edit: wanted to say whoever did the music in the app for this one did a spot on job. 2019 review: Sherlock is the only one I’ve played and I really disliked it. *mild spoilers maybe* Could have been good with better testing. But one of the numbers is clearly not the number it says it is and greatly looks like a different one, which threw a lot off on our game. On top of that, there’s some weird meta game stuff that probably is good for escape room fans, but bad for board gamers. Lastly there was one card that I’m genuinely not sure how I was supposed to know to use in the way it was supposed to be used without using a hint on the app, which I think is poor design since hints should be there to help you when you are stuck, not give direction. This one was a lot less fun than the previous unlock I played, which was Squeeks And Sausage. At the end of the game only one player was still interested in solving it, me and the 3rd player just wanted it to be over. I’m a big fan of puzzles but they require clear directions and also numbers that are written by people who know what numbers look like. My wife loved it despite these flaws, but it mostly ruined my experience. That said some of the puzzles were super clever and I enjoyed them individually even if not the whole game. This seems like it lacked blind playtesting. 1/10

Insert Coin - 9 My favorite 1 star difficult adventures. This was my first AR experience, which is used really well here. I just loved this entire adventure from beginning to end, really hit home with old school video game references that took me back to my childhood. This is easily one of my favorite Unlock adventures in the entire series. Sherlock Holmes - 8 Really liked this one. Designed by Dave Neale who wrote the most recent Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective. It certainly felt like solving a murder mystery like in SHCD, while using the Unlock format. I really enjoyed using the app to go to a new location to find more clues. I was a little disappointed with the final puzzle. The whole scenario you are trying to figure out who the culprit is and in the end, you are just solving a puzzle for the game to tell you who the culprit is. When playing Tombstone Express from the Secret Adventures box, you actually try to figure out the bad guy in the end and I thought that would be applicable in this scenario as well, felt a bit let down when that wasn't the case here. In Pursuit of the White Rabbit - 8.5 Another epic adventure similar to the Secret of Oz where you follow along another well loved story and get to run into familiar characters. This adventure wasn't too hard, but I was a little disappointed the app wasn't more utilized here. I felt the story wasn't as exciting as I anticipated. I was really looking forward to the Mad Hatter's Tea Party, just to feel like that was it. Also, the final puzzle was really cool, but predicable from the beginning, so it kind of lessened the enjoyment. Overall, I still liked the experience a lot, but perhaps I had too high of expectations. Overall - 8.5 Again, all three adventures were a lot of fun and they all provided something unique, but still highly enjoyable.
