Pattern Building is a system where players place game components in specific patterns in order to gain specific or variable game results. For example: placing chips on 2, 4, 6, 8 on a board gets the player an action card they can use later in the game.
Pattern Building
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

A completed game of Trellis would have to be one of the more attractive things one will see on the table. But behind the beautiful art, what had appeared at first to be a "nice, and very pretty little puzzle" has now become a somewhat more serious and interesting affair. We have played it a couple of dozen times at 2p over the past few nights, and more we played, the more we realised that there is a hidden depth to the gameplay. This is a good spatial puzzle, and whilst it would be a useful tool in helping children develop their spatial skills, this is by no means a simple children's game. Neither is it a brain-burner, but this game does require careful concentration on what the opponent is doing, as well as planning for your own coming moves. Whilst there always "the luck of the draw" with each new tile, there is also at least one clear "best move" with whatever tiles are in hand. There is plenty of scope for blocking off an opponent's long vines, whilst at the same time trying to protect your own, but this doesn't have to be done in a "take that" manner. Placing a blocking tile in a way that is advantageous to you can always be accompanied with "Sorry about this, but..." Gifting a bloom can also be a useful strategy, so keep an eye for those moves where your gift can turn out to be even more beneficial to you than it is to your opponent. The game's replay ability is almost infinite with so many different tiles. And there are plenty of them - so many that we just deplete the entire stack over several games at 2p, rather than reshuffle the used tiles at the end of every game. Set up time is negligible, and although the box suggests playing time of 20 mins (for 4P, I guess), but we have been getting play times of closer to 6 to 8 mins. This makes the game ideal for "best of 5 (or 7, or 9, or...)" campaigns. It certainly makes this game perfect as a quick filler between other activities. Trellis is a game that comes in a compact box (with its own insert), and it will find itself accompanying us on any overnight trips away. Sandy was very happy to have received this as a Christmas present, and the game is great value for its meagre price. (Don't tell Sandy that though – she might think that Santa was a skinflint!) A beautiful abstract strategy game where you place tiles with colored vines on them in an attempt to connect them to like vines causing your flowers to bloom. The first player to have all of their flowers blooming wins. Plays quick but has some interesting strategies to consider.

Incredibly fast abstract game with 2 players. Game is very simple and beautiful. Leads to some basic decisions of when if ever to give your opponent a bloom :)
