Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Games using the line drawing mechanic involve the drawing of lines in one way or another. Lines may be used to connect objects as in Sprouts, to isolate objects, or to create areas as in the classic Dots and Dashes, also known as Square-it.
Line Drawing
Games with partnerships offer players a set of rules for alliances and teams. Partners are often able to win as a team, or penalties are enforced for not respecting alliances
Partnerships
In storytelling games, players are provided with conceptual, written, or pictorial stimuli which must be incorporated into a story of the players' creation.

Wonderful surprise of a game. Note - The fun in the game is going to highly depend on how good your Long John Silver is at giving clues (or lack thereof). I saw a few of them end very early because they gave too much non-overlapping information. The LJS really needs to keep track of each players clue and give non-helpful additional clues.

Game is a little unbalanced, with Long John seldom winning, but this can be adjusted by allowing the Silver player to draw six cards up front, and strategically release information better throughout the game. The markers can also be hard to see on the colorful side of the board, but I am delighted that the sepia side of the board was replaced with a straight up map appearance (far more thematic and easy to see). Aside from these quibbles, this game is so much fun, and can be played with my children quite easily. I only wish it could be played with 6 players, but I understand why that would make it even more unbalanced.

I really like the idea of "coopetitive" games where players work together in some ways but are also trying to win on their own. Blue Moon City is another like that. Treasure Island fits the bill and creates an interesting mapping and logic experience with one player (Long John Silver) giving clues (mostly true) to the others about where the treasure is located. Players dig up areas all over the map, looking for the treasure. If they don't find it fast enough, LJS leaves his prison and can make a run for the treasure. The player (including LJS) who digs up the treasure first wins.
