Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.
Tile Placement
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Topiary is a tactical spatial puzzle. You can buy the game, or if you have a bunch of meeples kicking around, you could play with Lords of Scotland, Circus Flohcati, or Arboretum. On your turn, players simply place a meeple so that it's looking at any row, column, or diagonal in a 5x5 grid that is not occupied by another meeple. After placing you may choose pick up any face-down tile and replace it with one from your hand, face-up. Scoring dictates that you try to place same-suited tiles in an ascending order from the meeples you place, while simultaneously blocking opponents. It's nice to have a hand of three tiles and the tiles in your hand will be scored at the end of the game. It's a pretty simple and quick that is easily proxied by card games. The tiles are nice because they keep things compact, but cards are more easily protected from marking through card sleeves. This game is simply an ok game for me. It has it's positives aspects, but doesn't really do much to stand out against similar games.

This is a small abstract game featuring a bizarre subject: topiary. Players represent tourists looking at a field of topiary art; the idea is to have smaller plants be in front of larger ones so that the tourists, who may not walk in the area, can see everything from a small distance. Then there are also various shapes of topiary, and placing these in a line grants a bonus. By picking up cards and placing them strategically, you try to improve your own line of sight while blocking that of others. In practice I found the game to be difficult to plan and play because of all the chaos which arises from having a limited set of tiles to place as well as take into account all of the conflicting demands placed on where the topiary must appear. Since tourists may not stand in the same spot, you end up with rather bizarre encirclement with, obviously, completely opposite view requirements. It makes the experience rather grating; something that takes some doing for a game lasting only 10 to 15 minutes or so. All in all, not a fan. Really not a fan.
