Rating based on - 10 plays, 2 player This is a press-your-luck set collection and majority assessment game that has you collecting the fallen flowers of a cherry tree. In the 2 player game the cherry tree (flower bag) is seeded with 4 black flowers and 13 flowers each of the other five colours (pink, yellow, light blue, dark blue, and white), then 3 flowers are secretly drawn out of the bag and hidden in the box not to be used in that game. On your turn you must collect at least 1 flower up to a maximum of 8 by the end of your turn, and you can only draw from the bag up to 3 times. After each draw you check whether your flower collection so far that turn is successful or failed. Your collection has failed if you have collected 3 flowers of the same colour or 5 differently coloured flowers. The black flowers are wild and count towards those failed conditions. If your collection failed you must stop your turn immediately, put the black flowers back in the bag, choose 2 flowers of different colours to keep in front of your player screen, and return the rest of the flowers to the bag. If your collection is successful you get to use one of three special powers if the combination you've collected matches one of those, then optionally choose one colour of those collected to keep behind your screen and put the rest of the flowers in front of your screen. Flowers in front of your screen count for direct victory points at game end, and flowers behind your screen are evaluated for majority scoring in groups - 10 points for the player with more flowers in the warm group (pink and yellow), and 12 points for the player with more flowers in the cool group (light and dark blue). The multiplayer game has a ranked scoring table instead of flat points. Black and white flowers behind your screen count as wilds and may be added to any group once there is a coloured flower of that group present. The player with more points wins! This is an easy game to learn and play and I think the fun of it comes from not just simply collecting the flowers, but also trying to qualify for one of those special power Mastery Cards. These have a Classic side and an Advanced side and allow you to draw extra flowers from the bag, exchange flowers with another player, outright steal another player's flowers etc. The advanced side is definitely more 'take that'. That's not to say that the flower collecting element is weak because there is a nice bit of tension the closer you get to the end as the black flowers never leave the bag unless drawn by one of the players as a secret reward. While I like it well enough and I find the balancing of the in front of/behind screen dynamics mildly interesting, the majority scoring for the 2 player game and the number of mastery cards that reference other players indicates to me that it's probably going to be slightly better and more interesting with more players. In addition, I just don't think it's strong enough as a filler or stands out enough for me because all the bits are things I've experienced before in different games. The set collection scoring is quite similar to the Keltis games where you don't get any points for not collecting something, but once you start collecting you begin with negative points and have to earn your way up the point track. As far as 'fun and exciting games where you draw things out of a bag' Augustus has this one beat hands down, and in the realm of 'relaxing Japanese themed press-your-luck games' then the incredibly beautiful Kanagawa would be my go-to. It started off as another one of those "it's fine, but I'd prefer to play something else" games and ended up becoming boring quite quickly. Status: SOLD
