In the game Reef, players take on the role of the reef itself, alternating turns in which they carefully select the colors and patterns in which to grow and expand — the more beautiful the reef, the more points they score!

The title, theme and cool components had me sold before I even played it. Chill game but still has you thinking what pieces to play next. Easy to teach non-gamers and plays great with 2 players.

It's good to look at, it's fun and it doesn't overstay its welcome. It's also a bit random, but hey ho...

Originally rated this a 7, but since our first play or two it just never makes it to the table. There are better abstract games that have better staying power. [Adding a comment I made in the hot deals forum in 2021:] I really wanted to like this but it just didn't do it for me or my kids (6 and 9). The decisions aren't exciting enough, the patterns on the cards aren't that motivating, and the end result that you create (the reef) never feels that satisfying. We just never got that feeling of cleverness or excitement from having crafted patterns that worked together to score a ton of points; the "wow" or "ah-hah!" moment you get from making things fit just perfectly. My wife liked it more than us, and either she had more success getting those hard fits to work out or she had lower expectations for it than we did. For our youngest he just never got to build anything that was satisfying; he didn't care about stacking the pieces the way the game wanted him to, and couldn't find any other way to stack them that made him happy.
