Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Some board games incorporate elements of role playing. It can be that players control a character that improves over time. It can also be a game that encourages or inspires storytelling.
Role Playing
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

HeroQuest is an (old) ameritrash 1 vs many dungeon crawler (system). It is more a RPG than a board game where the Dungeon Master player regulates and tweaks the difficulty and experience for the party. # Quick scenarios. # Scenario based campaign. It's can be a bit swingy, because if your character dies, you ought to create a new one for the rest of the campaign. Furthermore, the rules for what you carry over to the next scenario are vague. Even the order of the scenarios is unclear. # Very simple: Not enough to do if you control just one character. # With lower player counts, a player controls multiple characters. # Roll to move can be quite annoying (some people play with fix movement of six instead). # Luck-based: dice based combat: attack and defense roll. # Setting: Fantasy (Conan, Barbarians). # App will be released to customize quests and play solo or coop. Similar games: * Altar Quest: a lot of dice rolling. * Descent / Imperial Assault * Warhammer Quest * Level 7 [Omega Protocol]: 1 vs many, much more deterministic, sci-fi.

Oh man, do I love this game. Many, many memories of playing this with my cousins...funny, most of those memories involved arguing and in-fighting. Great game.
