Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
The simultaneous action selection mechanic lets players secretly choose their actions. After they are revealed, the actions resolve following the rule-set of the game.

A bike racing game where each team has two runners, each with his own deck of cards. All the game is about managing clogging of the deck with exhaustion cards, while leeching from other runners via slipstream to run the distance without burning too many good cards. The game system seems so barebones it should not work, but yet it's a lot of fun, allowing bluffing, risk taking and opportunism to grab a win down to the wire. A very accessible game which is a lot of fun, I think it will work well in a family context. Still, it did not convince certain gamers, who were left wondering where was the game, and observing that the peloton was so clumped that not much changed from the beginning to the end of the race. Still I liked this game, but caveat emptor

A fun racing game with light hand management/deck building. I don't think the SUSD guys are right that is ground breaking.

Flamme Rouge is a breezy, speedy, bike racing game that plays like its subject matter. Gameplay is simple: two bikers are controlled by two decks in two-card rounds. It's fun to jostle with other players on the variable race tracks, trying to guess each other's pace to cycle efficiently. There's a great thematic gameplay trajectory over each game as everyone speeds along before decks thin out into the dreaded exhaustion cards. Whether strategy or tactics win the game is open to debate, but it doesn't take away from the fun. In the end, Flamme Rouge's lightness and brevity makes it a easy game to introduce and play.
