In Evergreen, your goal is to build a lush ecosystem by planting seeds, growing trees, and placing other natural elements on your planet, trying to make it the greenest and most fertile of all.
You choose biome cards from a common pool to determine which area of your planet you’ll develop in a round. The cards not chosen make those regions more fertile, and thus more valuable. To create a huge forest, you want to grow trees, plant bushes, and place lakes, while using the power of nature to gain extra actions. Ideally you can concentrate your trees in the most fertile areas, but without them overshadowing one another as you also want them to collect as much light as possible.

Evergreen seems to carry over elements from Hach's 2017 title Photosynthesis, but with each player now having their own game board to develop as they wish

Beautiful art & boards, cool wooden pieces, excellent theme. First time, played with 2. Took us some time to get used to it, but still felt like the rulebook and the player aids printed right on each board were great! Much easier & faster on the 2nd play. Occasionally lost track of whether we advanced the power cylinders (but enjoyed the mechanism of the increasing powers because it helped as the game progressed). Once & a while I confused whether I already did an action/power up, but we also had a lot of non-game interruptions. Not a mean game if you don’t want it to be. Huge strategy hit with teen family member. Great family play! We actually choose not to do simultaneous play of the 3 person game (partly because we were teaching it to a new person). We found that that interaction where we took turns was more fun for us, because it increased the interaction with other players, so that will be an unofficial house rule.

Over the course of four seasons, grow trees from tender shoots to mighty forest giants, each competing for a place in the sun. Whoever manages to grow the most bountiful planet, wins. Evergreen takes the theme and mechanics established in "Photosynthesis" and replaces the latters confrontational nature with a gentle, relaxed puzzliness. The theme of growth runs through "Evergreen" as a common thread. Everything gets bigger, better, stronger. A great feeling for those who like to see things grow and thrive. And the pretty little wooden shoots, trees and bushes evoke an almost childlike playfulness. A gentle, elegant strategy game with great material and a good balance of rule minimalism and depth.
