Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

2022-05-29 Initial Rating: 5.0 (May 2022) I don´t remember why I purchased Cat Café, perhaps it was on a sale. In any case, as soon as I learned that Cat Café was a roll and write game, my desire to play it plunged. I have played several games in this genre, and I have disliked every single one of them and Cat Café isn’t the exception. Having said that, the game surprised me as it is deeper than I initially thought (but not by much), in any case it is not a game for me. Cat Café´s rules are easy to teach, you can do it under 4 minutes as there are several concepts to explain. Playtime is around 40 minutes. The game´s components are ok; they are just dice and a sheet of paper. The art is ok as well. The theme is pasted on and you don´t feel it though the game. Gameplay is more interesting than expected. As is usual from roll and write games, a player will roll the dice and choose one for himself and then the other players can choose whatever he didn´t. When all players have chosen a die will remain so all players will use their own die AND the leftover die together. With those dice you can check a box with the coordinate given by the dice, that is, if you have a 6 and a 2, you can use the 2-die power in any 6 position or the 6-die power in any 2 position. Each number has a different power so there are 6 different powers (ways to score) managing where to play your dice is the decision you have to take in each turn. Even though there are several powers, the decisions needed to play the game aren’t that hard to process. As is also usual with this kind of game, the luck factor is VERY high, and the mitigation elements are few. You can use a butterfly to change the number of the die but still, luck plays an important role in deciding the winner. Fortunately, the game plays fast so the high luck factor doesn’t bother me that much. Best with 2 players. The replay value seems low as every game feels exactly like the one before. Bottom line, Cat Café is a good roll and Write game, but I heavily dislike the whole genre, so it is not a game for me. Having said that, Cat Café is among the best in its genre with more interesting decisions than most, still, the decisions needed to play the game aren’t hard to process and the luck factor is high, but it plays relatively fast. My desire to play the game again is very low and I will sell it ASAP. Current Rating: 4.0

Awkward user interface, no particular thematic congruence, and poor 2-player scaling made this a downer for me. My love of cats seems to lead to pretty bad board-game decisions. This game isn't terrible! But it's nothing special and also not my jam, but I ordered it sight unseen because cats.

playedon BGA. Looks great, has it's charme, but I don't want to count or think about numbers/which choice gives me more points I just want to have fun and fill the sheet.
